If your item is slightly heavier than 20lbs but less than 35lbs, you should choose a corrugated box with a burst test value of 150# and 26 ECT to account for the extra weight.
Single-faced boards are used to make extremely lightweight corrugated boxes, which consist of one corrugated media attached to one flat sheet of lin board. The flutes are visible on the inside, making the cloth easy to wrap around anything.

Choosing a corrugated material with a burst test grade of 175# or 200# (29 ECT, 32 ECT, respectively) for products weighing more than 35lbs but less than 65lbs is critical to ensure the safety of your packaging and products.
Corrugated boxes with handle having a burst rating of 175# (29 ECT) may support up to 50lbs while preserving the structure and strength of the box. Boxes having a burst rating of 200# (32 ECT) can support 65lbs.
The most common corrugated boxes are 32 ECT and 200# Mullen single wall boxes. They are made of one corrugated media that is glued between two sheets of liner board for increased strength and are available in a range of sizes to match your packing and shipping requirements.
Corrugated Board | Single Wall | 66-100lbs
With increased weight comes increased structural needs for transportation, and once your product weighs 66 lbs or more, it is critical to choose a corrugated material with a burst test rating of 275# (44 ECT) or higher.
Incorporating corrugated boxes with an ECT of at least 44 indicates that the material can withstand up to 100lbs without structural damage or box failure. These heavy-duty single-wall boxes can resist more weight while being handled, shipped, and stored.
Although some single-wall corrugated boxes can hold up to 120 pounds (Burst test rating of 350# and ECT of 55#), this range is often regarded as the tipping point where you should choose double wall construction for extra durability.
The term “double-wall” refers to three sheets of liner board with two mediums in between, resulting in two “walls” and considerably enhancing box strength.
81-120lbs | Double-Wall Corrugated Box With Handle Board
Corrugated materials must have additional layers of protection and durability for shipping things weighing more than 80 pounds. The increased material and additional “wall” of double-wall corrugated materials considerably boost the robustness of the box.
Entry-level double wall boxes have an ECT rating of 48 and a Mullen Test rating of 275#, which means they can support up to 100lbs of weight while maintaining structural integrity, security, and durability throughout transit and storage.
The next strongest box is a 51 ECT or 350# Mullen double-wall box with a stronger liner board that can support up to 120 pounds.
Pro Tip: A double-wall corrugated material is also available for lighter-weight products (under 80 lbs), with an ECT rating of 42 and a burst test value of 200#, these boxes can handle up to 80lbs while offering excellent protection for its contents.
121-180lbs | Double-Wall Corrugated Board
As the weight of your shipment increases, the value will almost certainly increase as well. With greater value, there is no time to skimp on packing; instead, bring in the big guns – the triple wall.
Four sheets of liner board are sandwiched between three mediums to form three “walls” for maximum robustness. These corrugated box with handle are rated 400# to 600# on the burst test and from 61 ECT to 82 ECT due to their triple layer of protection. These boxes can hold up to 180 pounds of stuff while also providing enhanced security and structural durability while in transportation.
