How to measure garage door springs?

Measuring the length of a spring is the most effortless of all the tasks debated here since it applies no special antics or unique knowledge. The spring length is measured with a tape measure, and the number of inches is written down. So, if the tape measure says that your spring is 36 inches long from one end to the other, it means it’s three feet long.

Measure your Spring Wire Size

The soundest way to figure out the size of the wire is by measuring ten coils, then 20 coils, and comparing the numbers.  To the closest 1/16″ of an inch, measure.  Ensure that there are no spaces between the coils. Once you measure coils with gaps, you will get the wrong readings.

When the cone stretches the coils of a smaller wire, there are more gaps.  Don’t use a gauge because each coil will be different.

Measure Garage Door Height

Most garage doors will be seven or eight feet tall. With a tape measure, it’s easy to tell which one it is. If your garage door is taller than 8 feet, please call the experts. They will gladly help you find the right spring for these bigger doors.

Measure the inside diameter of a torsion spring.

If a torsion spring is broken, measure its inside width.  If it is one piece, measure the outside width and subtract the size of the wire times two. Most springs for homes have an inside width of 1 3/4″ or 2″.  Raynor garage doors might have a 2 1/4″ inside width.

If the spring is still tight, it might be challenging to use the ladder.  Check the cones on every end of the spring; you’ll see numbers such as 175 or 200, or 225.  It shows how big the inside of the torsion spring is.

Measure the spring length.

You should figure out how long the unwound spring is, but you don’t have to take it apart to measure it. If the torsion spring isn’t broken or wound up, measure its length.

Measure the spring length from the first coil on one end to the last coil on the other. Don’t count the cones in your measurement. Instead, count the coils that are on the cones.

Figure out what kind of spring wind you require.

There are left wind and right wind torsion springs. When you look at the garage door, the right-wound springs are on the left and are wound clockwise, while the left-wound springs are on the right and are wound counterclockwise. If the door has two torsion springs, you should repair both simultaneously to keep the tension even.

Take away

Follow each step carefully to measure your torsion springs.  If two springs are on the garage door, measure each separately.  It’s not unusual to have two springs that are different sizes.  If you’d rather have a set that matches, GL Metal can turn a set that doesn’t match into one that does.

Before ordering a new torsion spring for your garage door, you should get exact measurements of the broken one.
